TINY HOUSE

A Community Design Solution for Housing the Homeless

Based on this research and in consultation with staff and guests of the Mid Maine Homeless Shelter in Waterville, our class designed a tiny house community sited on the banks of the Kennebec River in Waterville. This location was chosen because there are already two informal communities of people living in tents on this site, and the site is within easy walking distance of the Mid Maine Homeless Shelter and all city services. Although this community was designed for a specific site, it could be easily adapted to be suitable for any two acre site.

Each student designed a tiny home for the community, so every house is individual. They we considered how to site them and relate them to one another to preserve both a sense of privacy and community. They also designed a community center for the residents.

All the designs embody a sense of expansion and transition, qualities particularly important when inhabiting a small space. These feelings of expansion and transition are expressed in a variety of ways in the individual homes, the community center and the site itself.
